Arbor Day at WRSD

The Willie Ross class out at Mountain View Elementary participated in the Arbor Day ceremony on Friday May 7th.  They performed a poem that Morgan wrote called "It's Amazing".  They color coordinated themselves to go along with the poem.  Bryan wore yellow for the sun, Jordan wore green (and spray painted his hair green too!) for the grass, Justin wore blue for the sky, and Morgan & Velinda wore brown for the trees.  There were many people in attendance.  The whole school was there as well as the Co-Superintendent of Schools, State Representative Angelo Puppolo, Jr., and other leaders of the community.  We were very proud of our students' performance!

March 2010
The Partnership Elementary students went on a trip to Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary in Wales, MA. They had a special presentation about finding animal tracks. They each made a plaster cast of a bobcat track. They also saw a slideshow and a movie about animal tracks. The children enjoyed playing the game, Tick, Track, Toe.

March 2010  WRSD Helps Haiti
In Environmental Science class, the students did not just read from a book about the various aspects of our environment, they researched a variety of environmental issues and possible steps to improve the situation.  They also kept up with weekly environmental events, such as hurricanes, fires, plagues, comets, and wildlife.  When the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti occurred, the students wanted to do more than just read about what happened.  They wanted to help!

The Environmental Science class composed a letter asking the staff at WRSD for their spare change, made donation canisters, sent them to each site and decided to use UNICEF as the charity of choice.  The students collected and counted the donations, mostly composed of spare change. After several counts and tables covered with coins, they collected over $300.

The Environmental Science class hopes we all continue to give what we can when we can.  Every little bit makes a difference.

Willie Ross Basketball
WRSD won the final five games of the season. Elvin Maldonado scored 40 points to lead upset of Austine School for the Deaf in the final game. The team was led by the steady play of senior Mike Reno who scored in double figures in eight games, plus the rebounding and defense of Jason Kane and Trevor Bynum.

On September 29, students from all over the world celebrated School Milk Day. This international, annual event helps promote the importance of calcium and vitamin D in our children's diet.

Deaf Awareness Week is the last full week in September. One of the ways we celebrated was to give our aging and beloved "Flora" a helping hand.

Mr. Bill Putnam, father of Trustee Erica Broman, drove his 1910 Stevens Duryea Model Y car to Willie Ross on September 25th. The car was made for his great uncle Roger Putnam, former Mayor of Springfield, and for whom Putnam High School was named. The car was shipped east for the Springfield History Museum’s grand opening in October. The student’s came out to see the car and enjoyed not only the visit, but getting to sit in the car. It was quite a treat for WRSD to have Mr. Putnam stop by before heading on to the museum.
