School-to-Career

For students who wish to pursue vocational studies, WRSD offers a comprehensive Transition: School-to-Career Services Program that begins at age 14 with a job skills class and prevocational training. Students ages 16-22 have the opportunity to engage in formal, off-campus work-study internships throughout the community. Willie Ross juniors and seniors who have completed most of their credits can participate in the Transition: School-to-Career Services Program half-day work-study internships and will complete high school in five years.

Students ages 14-22 who participate in this weekly job skills class taught by our Adjustment Counselor/Transition Specialist and the School-to-Career Coordinator learn career readiness skills that include:

  • Effective communication strategies
  • Goal setting and problem solving
  • Career exploration
  • Job-seeking skills including résumé and cover letter development
  • Development of a comprehensive transition portfolio
  • Comprehensive vocational assessments
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Self-advocacy and assertiveness techniques
  • Access to community resources including vocational rehabilitation services (MRC)
  • Transportation – accessing the PVTA or getting a driver's license
  • Monthly guest speakers and/or field trips
  • Community involvement
  • Understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act
